ビジネス英会話の中級、上級者が仕事で使う「比較」の英語表現13選

比較とは「二つまたはそれ以上の対象を種々の観点から観察し、それらの類似性ないし同一性、および差異性を明らかにする思考の働き」(日本大百科事典)。

学校の英語科目の「比較」は、英語の文法事項で比較級(主に形容詞にerやmoreを付ける)を勉強すれば終わりですが、ビジネスコミュニケーションの中で本当に大切なのは、この比較(思考の働き)をどのように活用して、自分の説明の説得力を増すかということになります。

基本的に、説得は、以下の3つを促します。
■相手がこちらの話しを理解すること (understand)
■そして、それを受け入れること (accept)
■または、それが行動に反映されること (take action)

では、どのような比較が説得力を増すのに役立つか、ネイティブ講師たちが作った例文を具体的に見てみましょう。

~と比べて(compared to と in comparison with、by comparison)

~と比べて類似性や差異性を顕かにすることで、本質や実態を理解するのに助けとなります。
compared to, in comparison with という、compare(比較する)に関連した表現は、物事を比較する時に非常によく使われる表現です。

Compared to

This article pointed out that the Japanese expenditure for public education is remarkably low compared to other countries.
この記事では、日本の公教育に対する支出は、他の国々に比べて著しく低いと指摘しています。

This company earned only a small profit compared to what was expected.
この会社は期待に反してほんの少しの利益しか上げていません。

以下のように、文頭で使うこともできます。

Compared to thirty years ago, the Japanese economy is growing at a much slower pace now.
30年前に比べると、今の日本経済の成長速度は各段に遅いです。

In comparison with

France is the number one producer of nuclear power with a low use of coal, oil or other fossil fuels in comparison with other European countries.
フランスは、他のヨーロッパ諸国に比べ、石炭や石油、その他化石燃料をあまり使わず、原子力で発電をしている一番の国です。

The euro is very high in comparison with the yen.
ユーロは円に比べて非常に高いです。

By comparison

The quality of our research output will increase by comparison to previous research.
私達のリサーチの質は、過去のものに比べて改善していくでしょう。

You must feel very busy at work, indeed, if your Chinese lesson is relaxing by comparison! I hope your five projects go smoothly and that you don’t become overwhelmed with your work.

~と~を比べて、どう思いますか?(How do you think ___ compares with ___?)

 ~と~を比べて、どう思いますか?How do you think ___ compares with ___?

類似性や差異性を見つける、明らかにする思考の働きを相手に促す質問です。

仕事の中で、物事を比べる機会というのは、結構あります。そして、そういった機会では、人に意見を求める形をとることも多くあります。

そんな時に使える表現です。

<例>
I see you have been doing research to find us a better supplier for our raw materials. How do you think LEN company compares with TOHO company? My impression is that they both have a reliable reputation.
あなたは、原材料のより良い供給先を探していましたよね。TOHO社に比べて、LEN社をどう思いますか?私の印象では、どちらも信頼できる評判を得ていると思うのですが。

一方で(on the other hand)

Aの事柄について紹介した後、その一方で、という接続語を用いて、Bの事柄を対比して述べる話法は、物事を説明する時や、何かを説得する際によく用いられます。

On the other hand,

I think the industry has a lot of potential; on the other hand, the businesses and services associated with the industry are perhaps not very well-developed.
この産業は非常にポテンシャルがあると思っていますが、一方で、この産業に付随するビジネスやサービスは、おそらく、あまり開発されていません。

It’s too bad that your project at work has prevented you from studying English much of late, although on the other hand it sounds great that it is a very exciting project and that it may be wrapped up by August.
仕事のプロジェクトが忙しくて、最近はあまり英語の勉強が出来ないというのは残念ですが、とても面白そうなプロジェクトのようですし、8月までには終わりそうというのは素晴らしいですね。

~とは対照的に(in contrast to)

~とは対照的にOn the other hand と似た表現です。何かについて述べた後、それとは相対する点を挙げて比較します。

In contrast to

In contrast to the shareholder, the partner not only invests money but is also involved in running the business
シェアホルダーと違って、パートナーとは、お金を投資するだけでなく、ビジネスの運営にも携わります。

as opposed to

We had a great conversation about globalization and what it means today as opposed to what it meant many years ago.
グローバリゼーションについて、昔に比べて今、それがどう価値があるのかについて、素晴らしい話し合いができました。

For the time being, maybe VR will only be used professionally to train specialists because as the article reported, the total cost of the equipment is still very high so it may only be accessible to major companies or businesses who believe it will pay for itself as opposed to being an option for ordinary consumers.
現状では、VRはスペシャリストを専門的に養成する場合にのみ使われています。なぜなら、この記事にあるように、装備にかかるコストはまだ非常に高く、一般の消費者のオプションというよりは、元が取れると考えている大企業くらいしか手がでないからです。

~とは違って(be different than)

~とは違って違いを説明して、物事を比較します。「考えていたもの」と、「以前」と比べて、違っているということは、日常生活でもよくあることですね。

be different than

The town is quite different than what it was five or six years ago.
その街は5,6年前とは随分変わっています。

Sometimes I regret purchasing items because it’s different than the online image.
時々、オンライン上での写真と違っていて、購入を後悔することがあります。

~については、しかしながら(with __ although)

前述した事柄に対して、反対の点を指摘して比較します。以下の例文では、書店について、実店舗とオンラインショップの利点、欠点を比較しています。

with __ although,

The advantage of a physical bookstore is that we can browse through the books and look at them, but we’re limited to the ones which are there; with online shopping, although we can’t actually hold the books, we can see the entire range of what’s available.
実店舗の良さは、本を実際に見て、ざっと中身を見てみる事が出来る点ですが、お店にある本に限られてしまいます。オンラインショップでは、本を実際に手に取ってみることは出来ませんが、出回っている全ての本を見ることが出来ます。

以前より、もっと~になっている(getting __er / getting more __)

ビジネスも技術も、日々進化し、凄いスピードで動いています。以前との比較を描写することは仕事の中でも非常によくあるシーンでしょう。

getting __er/ getting more __ , becoming __er / becoming more __

It’s getting easier for new graduates to find jobs now because Japanese society is aging.
日本社会は高齢化が進んでいるので、新卒の人達は以前より職を探しやすくなっています。

Nowadays in Japan, it’s becoming more and more popular to barbecue.
最近、日本では、バーベキューの人気がどんどん出てきています。

These days, the Japanese regulations are getting stricter compared to a decade ago.
最近は、10年前に比べて日本の規制は厳しくなってきています。

 (以前と比べて、)もっと~になった(have become__er / have become more __)

上のgetting (becoming) more __ では、「なってきている」と動きを表現していますが、この言い方は、以前に比べて〇〇になった状態を表します。

have become __er / have become more__

The preferences of consumers these days have become more diverse.
最近の消費者の動きは、より多様になっています。

Their programmes have become less interesting and exciting lately, so I don’t watch them as often as I used to.
彼らの番組は、最近、面白くなく、ワクワクしなくなっているので、以前ほど見なくなりました。

~には当てはまらない(not the case with ___, this is not the same for __)

not the case with __.

想定されるケース、よくあるパターンと比べて、違った帰結となる時に使える表現です。

仕事上、一般的に想像される原因と結果の関係が崩れて「しかし、今回のケースは違います。」といった発言をすることは、よくあると思います。

That’s not the case with ~. あるいは
That was not the case with ~. というように使われることがよくあります。

<例文>
Usually we might expect a slight downturn in sales when a company changes its logo and brand identity, but that’s not the case with our situation. We saw an immediate increase in sales when we created the new design.
通常ロゴやブランドアイデンティティを変えると、若干、売上げの減少が予想されるものですが、我々の場合は違います。新しいデザインにしたら、急激に売り上げが伸びました。

~は、そんなことはありません

This is not the same for __

「あの会社のサービスは無愛想ですが、製品はそんなことはありません。素晴らしいです。」というような、何かと何かを比較し、「同じではない」という形で違いを表わす機会で使えます。

<例文>
Transportation network companies (such as Uber and Lyft) have become very popular in the United States. This is not the same for Japan, which currently does not allow such companies to operate legally.
ウーバーやリフトなど移動のためのネットワークを運営する会社はアメリカでは非常に人気が出ています。日本では違っていて、現状、法的にそういった会社の経営は認められていません。

as __ as を使った比較 ~と同じように〇〇だ

as __ as を使った比較 ~と同じように〇〇だ程度や状態などを比較して、「~と同じくらい〇〇」であるという時に使える表現です。また、not as __ as として、「~ほど、〇〇ではない」というようにも使えます。

as __ as

Northern universities are just as expensive as the ones in Oslo.
北側の大学は、オスロの大学と同じくらい費用が高いです。

Hosting parties in your home is not as common as going to a restaurant.
ホームパーティを開くのは、レストランでのパーティほど一般的ではありません。

These days, children don’t exercise as much as they once did in the past.
最近の子供達は、昔ほど運動をしません。

~より〇〇だ(__er than __ / more __ than __)

いわゆる、比較級を使った比較です。差の程度を示す場合には、much を使います。

__er than __ / more __ than __

It was indicated that the effects of casino gambling are greater than other forms of gambling.
カジノは、他のギャンブルに比べて影響が大きいと指摘されています。

This generation has more than their parents had.
この世代の子たちは、両親や祖父母の世代に比べて恵まれた(楽な)生活をおくっています。

If we look at voter turnout, the rate among the elderly is much higher than the younger generation.
投票する人を見ると、高齢者の割合が若い年代に比べて圧倒的に多いです。

Than 以下の内容が明白な場合は、省略することもあります。
In bigger companies it is much easier to access childcare leave, but it is still just an option you have.
大きな会社では、(中小企業に比べて)随分と育児休暇を取りやすいですが、とはいえ、それもまだオプションに過ぎません

~より〇〇でない

~より〇〇でないLess __ than __

同様にless __ もよく使いますね。

Japan has relatively less inequality than other countries because our tax rate for corporations is higher.
日本は法人税が高いので、他の国に比べれば比較的不公平感は少ないです。

I hope the coming week is less busy for you than the last one.
来週は前の週ほど忙しくないと良いですね。

その差の程度がとても大きい場合には、much を使います。
At that time, women were much less respected by the scientific community
当時、科学の分野において、女性は(今と比べて)軽視されていました。

I eat much less rice now than I used to.
以前ほど、最近はご飯を食べなくなりました。

仕事での会話で、比較表現を上手に活用して類似性や差異をうまく表現することができると、相手の理解がスムーズに促進され、それによって相手はこちらの提案などを受け入れ易くなります。そして、理解と納得が進んだ提案は、行動に積極的に反映されることとなるでしょう。
