契約関係を基本とするビジネスの世界では、期限、期間、締切りは必ず明らかにすることが求められる必須事項とも言えます。
それだけに、誤った単語の選択や使い方をすると、仕事の期限について誤った認識を与えて、大きなミスに繋がりかねないため、気を付けて使うべき表現でもあります。

「期間」を意味する名詞
Period
「〇〇から××までの一定の期間」や、「〇〇年の間」に、など一般的に幅広く使える単語です。
＜ネイティブ講師の英語例文＞
You have achieved the sales target for every month for a period of three years.
あなたは、3年の間、毎月売り上げ目標をクリアしてきました。
the 12 month period from April 2016 to March 2017
2016年4月～2017年3月までの12か月間
The x-axis shows time over a forty year period from nineteen fifty to nineteen ninety.
Ｘ軸は、1950年～1990年までの40年の期間を示しています。
Term
period と同じように使えますが、term の方がより厳密で、堅い表現になります。
例えば、在籍期間、収監期間、投資の期間などを表現する際に使われます。

We can’t extend the term of the warranty but we can offer you a fifty percent discount on service, repair or a new computer in the second year.
保証期間は延長できませんが、2年目のサービスや修理費用、またはコンピューター購入について50％のディスカウントをご提供できます。
The term of my contract is four years.
契約期間は4年です。
We can secure a term of employment.
雇用期間を保証できます。
Duration
物事が持続的に起こっている、続いている期間を表します。
＜ネイティブ講師の英語例文＞
We weren’t allowed to speak Japanese for the duration of the camp.
キャンプをしている間、日本語は禁止でした。
It’s important for customers to have a comfortable stay during the duration of the flights.
フライトの間、お客様に快適に過ごして頂くことが大切です。
※このように、キャンプをしている間ずっと、フライトの間ずっとというように、物事が持続的に起こることを表現しています。
We cannot predict the extent or the duration of a torrential downpour so, in other words, we can’t predict how long it will last or how big an area will be affected.
どの程度激しい雨になり、それがどれくらいの間続くのか予測できません。言い換えれば、どのくらいの間、どれだけ影響を受けるのか予測できないのです。
「期限」「締め切り」を意味する名詞
due date
決められた日、約束の期限、という意味です。

Because of this, we were ultimately unable to meet the due date that had been originally set.
このため、私達は最終的には、もともと決められていた期限に間に合わせることが出来ませんでした。
I can’t usually finish reading them before the due date.
たいてい、返却期限までに本を読み切れません。
I don’t have a due date job.
私は期限のある仕事をしていません。
なお、due date は出産予定日を意味する場合もあります。

The doctor says that even though the due date is a couple of weeks from now the baby could be born anytime.
医師は、出産予定日が2週間先であっても、いつ赤ちゃんが生まれてもおかしくないと言います。
expiration (date)
expiration で契約などが終了すること、期限が切れることを意味し、expiration dateは、有効期限を表します。

ABC Company’s sales have continued well enough, even though there have been some negative features, such as the expiration of the patent for one of the main products.
主力商品のうちの一つについて特許が切れてしまうなど、いくつかネガティブな要素はあるものの、ABC社の売上げは十分伸びています。
I sometimes find food at the grocery store that has already passed its expiration date.
そのお店で消費期限が過ぎた食品を目にすることがあります。
deadline
締切日、期限という意味です。

This week has been very busy at my work. There are several projects on the go and multiple deadlines to meet.
今週はとても忙しかったです。いくつかのプロジェクトが動いていて、締め切りが重なっています。
I like to have a timeline with milestones and a set deadline.

約束の時間や作業の期限を守ることは、仕事の基本です。
それが危うそうなときには、なんとか期限に間に合わせるためのアイディアを捻り出して、この表現を使ってみてください。
事情や理由を説明する一文を後ろに付けてあげると、聞き手の納得感も増します。
＜例文＞
Unfortunately, we’re not going to meet the deadline unless we are willing to work throughout the night. We have no choice but to keep going if we do not want to disappoint the client.
「期間」「期限」「締め切り」を表現する前置詞の使い方の違い
次に、前置詞を使った期間の表し方です。具体的な期間を表せるため、非常によく使われます。
for
for ＋時間で、一定の期間を表します。
＜ネイティブ講師の英語例文＞
There is a government subsidy for newborn children for 5 or 6 years to cover medical expenses.
政府は、新生児に、5、6年の医療費補助をしています。
I feel out of practice if I’ve been away from work for a week.
一週間仕事から離れただけでも、腕がなまったような気がします。
We’ve been collaborating with a couple of universities, conducting joint research, for the past 2 or 3 years.
我々は過去２～３年、２つの大学と共同でリサーチを進めてきました。
over
Over ＋時間で、「（時間）をかけて」、「（時間）に渡って」という訳がしっくりきます。

I’ve been living in Taiwan for over two years now.
今まで、台湾に２年に渡って住んでいます。
As a result of my efforts and leadership, revenue increased by 30% over two years.

in
In ＋時間で、「（時間）の間」、「（時間）以内で」という意味です。
＜ネイティブ講師の英語例文＞
My city is very old so the government has developed a new design that will be completed in two years.
私の街は非常に古いので、政府が新たなデザインを作り、それが２年以内に完成の予定です。
This is my first time here in four years.
ここ４年間で初めてのことです。
Maybe in a couple of years from now our youngest daughter and I will go there.
２年以内に、一番下の娘がそこに行くかもしれません。
また、「以内」「～のうちに」という意味を強調する場合、In +（時間）time と、time を付けて表現することも多いです。
My contract will be up in two years. I need to find another position before then.
この文章を、以下のように言い換えられます。
↓
In two years time, my position with the company will be finished. I will need to find another job by then.
今後2年以内に会社との契約が切れます。それまでに、他の仕事を探さなければなりません。
within
within＋時間 と、その期間の域を出ない「間で」「以内で」という意味を強調します。

I haven’t found any interesting things so far, but within a few years I’ll have to find something.
今のところ面白そうなものは見つかっていませんが、数年以内に何か見つけなければいけないでしょう。
I ought to be able to bring the company back into the black within a year
２年以内に会社を黒字に転換させなければなりません。
during
名詞のduration と同様、～の間、断続的にずっとという意味合いになります。

I learned a lot about working in foreign environments during my time in Columbia.
コロンビアに居る間ずっと、海外の環境で仕事をするということについて、多くを学びました。
At the end of last year, during the Christmas holiday, I took a trip to Sri Lanka.
昨年末、クリスマス休暇の間、スリランカに旅行に行きました。
until
untilは接続詞としても使えますが、ここでは、前置詞としての用例をご紹介します。「（時期）まで」「（時間）までの間に」という意味です。

I’ll ask Karen to pick you up here, but until then, would you like something to drink?
カレンに、ここまでお迎えに来るように申しますが、それまで何かお飲み物はいかがですか？
He’s out of the office until Wednesday, if you like you could leave him a message on his voice mail.
水曜日まで彼は不在です。よろしければ、メッセージを残して下さい。
I had to stay at the office and work on a proposal until 9 pm.
オフィスに居て９時まで提案書を作っていました。
That was true until about four or five years ago.
４、５年前まではそうでした。（今は違う）
by
Until と混同しがちですが、by は「～の前までに」というように、期限をきる際などに使われます。

申し訳ありません。レポートは木曜までに出来上がりませんが、土曜日までには何とかします。

日本国内のWifi ホットスポット数は2020年のオリンピックが来るまでに、２倍になっているかもしれません。
until と by – ここに注意！
By とUntil は、以下のように使い分けします。意味が全く異なってきますので、期限についての報告など、お仕事での使用の際は特に気を付けましょう。
I can write it by 3 pm. → ３時までに書き上げます。
I can write it until 3 pm. → ３時まで書いていられます。
I can’t write it by 3 pm. → ３時までに書き終えることは出来ません。
I can’t write it until 3 pm. → ３時まで書けません。（３時以降なら、書き始められます。）
接続詞を使って「期間」や「期限」を表現する
While
「～している間ずっと」という意味なので、during the time that と言い換えられます。「～と同時に」という場合にも使われます。
＜ネイティブ講師の英語例文＞
I can’t help looking at my emails while I’m travelling.
旅行している間も、メールを確認せずにはいられません。
Let me fill you in on what has been happening while you were away.
あなたが居なかった間、何があったか話しますね。
I thought I heard her come in while we were having dinner.
夕食をとっている時に、彼女が帰ってきたのが分かりました。
Until
「～する時まで」。ある動作や状態が続く時に使います。

この記事を読むまで、ネットワークカメラについて聞いた事もありませんでした。
I hope the rain holds off until I return home.
帰るまでに雨が止むと良いのですが。

その他、ビジネスで使える「期間」「期限」の表現
Up until then：その時まで それまで
It was considered innovative at the time because up until then my company maintained a very outdated system.
その時は革新的だと思われました。なぜならそれまで、うちの会社では、とても古いシステムが使われていたからです。
Over time: ゆっくり時間をかけて 長い期間をかけて 徐々に
It might be necessary for companies to learn to gain from the benefits of diversity over time. But it is true that the earlier they start, the greater will be their advantages in the scheme.
企業は、多様性から生じる成果を業績に結び付けることを、時間をかけて学ばざるをえないかもしれませんが、早く始めれば、そのスキームで得られるものが、それだけ大きくなるというのは確かだと思います。
Over the years: 長年にわたって ここ何年も 年を追って
I have noticed over the years that a good majority of the parents who didn’t go to university never even offered university to their kids as an option.
大学へ行かなかった親の大半は、その子供たちに、1つのオプションとして大学進学を勧めてみることすらしない、という状況を私は何年にも渡って見てきました。
year-on-year：年を追うごとに
The competition has been fierce year-on-year.
競争は年を追うごとに激しくなっています。
for some time：しばらくの間
I expected the malfunction to last for some time but it was over soon.
故障はしばらく続くだろうと思っていましたが、すぐに解消されました。
for some time now: 今までかなりの間
I have been working on a project for some time now, and it just finished this week.
今までかなりの間、プロジェクトに関わってきて、今週それが終りました。
in the long run / for the long term：長期的に見れば
In the long run, the salary is higher or the total return is positive.
For the long term, the salary is higher or the total return is positive.
長期的に見れば、給料は高くなり、全体的な収入は良くなります。
I truly believe that education is related to future income. Firstly a university degree, I believe, will in the long run, provide opportunities to a person who has a degree, who simply wouldn’t qualify for certain jobs if they don’t.
教育は将来の収入に関係すると、心底思います。まずは大学の学位です。長い目でみると、学位が無いと資格要件すら満たせないような仕事に就く機会を、学位によって得られるのです。
in the long (medium/short) term：長期的（中期的・短期的）に見れば
I like your point that in the short term or even medium term, the cooperation between public and private elements would be effective, but in the long term it would be detrimental.
短期、あるいは中期的に見て、官民の協力は効果的だが、長期的に見ると害になるという指摘は面白いですね。
in due course/ in due time：そのうち
The sales reports for 2017 will be seen in due course, but in the meantime it appears that sales have improved slightly.
2017年の売上げ報告はそのうち上がってきますが、売上げは若干回復しているようです。
I’m sure that you’ll get used to the cold that winter brings in due time.
冬の寒さにもそのうち慣れますよ。
