• Popularとcommon

  似ているけれど、ニュアンスが違う言葉というものがあるものです。
  今日の例は、popular と common の違いです。

  この日、講師はこんな風にアドバイスしています。

  Instead of describing certain things as ‘popular’, you can use the word ‘common’.
  For example, instead of saying “Ovens are not popular in Japan”,
  you can say “ovens are not common in Japan”.

  Popular’ refers more to things which are liked, like movies or music, or leisure activities, whereas ‘common’ is a better word for more ordinary things like ovens.

  Popular とは、好き・人気があるモノ・コト　に使われる形容詞で、映画や音楽、商品など嗜好がからむ時に、よく使う単語です。

  よく使われるモノ　または　見られるモノ・コト　などについては、”common”　という形容詞のニュアンスが適切です。

  そのほか、「使える」とか「役に立つ」と言いたい時には、practical とか useful という形容詞が使えます。

  “English conversation is more practical”
  といった感じです。
